EXTERIOR PAINTING RULES

Painting involves a lot of chemicals and a fair amount of science. It’s worth thinking about these things when you are painting outdoors because there are more variables than when painting indoors, and it will affect your final results. Check out these 2018 fall painting tips before you begin.

  1. Clean and Dry
Before painting any surface, indoor or out, ensure that it is clean and dry.
  1. Outdoor Temperatures
If it is below 35 degrees outside, avoid painting. If you live in a cooler climate, and it’s not going to get above 35 degrees, ask for help from your paint provider. They will be able to find you paints that are specifically designed to perform in cool weather.
  1. Timing
The optimal time to paint outside is between 8 am and 3 pm. This gives the paint time to dry in the sun.
  1. The Sunny Side
Start on the sunny side and follow the sun as it moves across your home. This will help with drying time.
  1. Coating
Be aware of the temperature outdoors. If it is below 35 degrees, we recommend that you allow at least 24 hours of drying time in between coats to ensure that the first coat is fully dry.
  1. Dew Points
The dew point is the temperature at which moisture will condense on a surface. So if you are painting, and the dew point is 48 degrees, and it is 49 degrees outside, there is a good chance that you will have condensation on the exterior of your home. If you try to paint at that time, you could risk ruining your coat of paint with blotches or discoloration due to excess moisture. We recommend waiting until the temperature is at least 5 degrees above the dew point.

COLOR TRENDS OF 2018

Adding a new colors and patterns to your home can bring a space back to life. However, it’s important to stick with colors that will work well with what’s already there. Whether you are looking to freshen up a room for your own purposes, or if you are preparing your home for potential buyers, keep these 2018 fall painting tips in mind to make your space more appealing. Make it edgy and modern, without going over the top.

  1. Geometric Patterns
Adding simple patterns to your home can create a point of interest without being too overbearing. Try selecting a bold, bright color – like a bright turquoise or a sunny yellow. Then choose your accent wall. Paint all of your walls in the space with your bright color, except your accent wall. On your accent wall, use a stencil or painters tape to create a pattern – something as simple as interlocking diamonds or squares. Paint over the tape or stencil with your bright color and then allow time for drying. When you remove the tape/stencil, you will have a fun accent wall to draw the eye.
  1. Farmhouse Style
Farmhouse chic has been trending for the past few years, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. The color pallet that goes with this tends to be whites, light greys, and grayish blues. Pair these with natural colors, like wooden counter tops and wire basketry for storage. To add more of the farmhouse feel, try sanding some areas of the paint to make it look more dated.
  1. Wood and Natural
Using reclaimed and recycled materials is becoming more and more popular. This pairs well with the farmhouse style. If you already have beautiful wood, don’t hide it. Pick a nice stain that will protect and showcase the natural patterns of the wood.
  1. Balancing Dark and Light
Another 2018 fall painting tip includes selecting dark matte colors, such as charcoal or navy. However, these colors are very heavy, and it’s important to lighten them up. If you want to use a darker color in a space, try to offset it with lots of light and contrasting colors. Dark cabinets or walls pair well with a light floor or counter tops. Add bright metallic accessories, such as drawer handles or accent pillows.
