The Best Way To Remove Wallpaper
Did you recently move into a house and see that 1980’s wallpaper? Or did you install that “In style” wallpaper 20 years ago? If yes, we can walk you through how to remove that wallpaper. As the leading painting and home improvement contractor in Yorktown and Williamsburg, Virginia we have removed thousands of square ft of wallpaper. Below are the steps to remove the wallpaper and prepare the walls for paint.
Steps to Removing Wallpaper
Step 1: Lay out drop clothes or plastic under your wall you are working on.
Step 2: Use a wallpaper steamer in bottom corner of the wall to loosen up the wallpaper. Once it has bubbled you will use a drywall knife to scrape the wallpaper off. See links below for tools

Step 3: We recommend using the large plate head first. This will allow you to reach 95% of most spaces in that room. We recommend holding the steam plate over the same section for 10-30 seconds (until it bubbles) then scrape the paper away. Repeat until all of the paper is off.
Step 4: If you see paste or the backing of the wallpaper still on the wall you will need to use the steamer and knife to go over the wall again and repeat until all wallpaper and backing are off.
Step 5: If you see any brown spots (raw drywall) you will need to spot hit those areas with an oil based primer
Step 6: Complete any drywall repairs with drywall mud.
Step 7: After sanding of drywall mud and sanding of walls apply (1) coat of a clear sealer.
Step 8: Complete a light sand of the walls and correct any imperfections as needed.
Step 9: Have fun and paint your walls.
