How to Prep a Space for Painting

Painting a room might seem simple, but it can easily turn into a disaster. Spilled paint everywhere is a nightmare! If you don’t want to hire a professional painter, the best way to tackle a painting project is to prep the room before you even open the paint cans.

Start by gathering your supplies and arranging the room the way you’ll need it to be to paint. Here is a quick checklist to go through:

  • Remove everything from walls, shelving, etc. You need to make sure that the walls are bare of pictures and any other framed pieces. Shelves and tv stands should be cleared of all knick knacks, or anything that could be knocked over. The easiest way to do this is to grab a few boxes and place these items inside. Store them in a separate room, where they won’t accidentally have paint spilled on them, and they won’t be knocked over.
  • Move the furniture to the center of the room. This way you can easily cover it with a few plastic tarps, rather than using a tarp for every individual piece of furniture. Placing the furniture in the center also gives you space to place the ladder close to the wall. This will make painting easier and safer.
  • Cover the floor with 2 tarp layers. Cover the floor with heavy duty tarps first, and then add a second layer of plastic tarp. The plastic layer will give you time to clean up any spills before it seeps into the floor.
  • Cover bookcases, fireplace, or other built-in features. Using plastic wrap, cover any features in the room that are built-in. Use tape to ensure that the plastic doesn’t fall down while you are in the middle of the project.

Once you’ve prepped the space for painting, you can then bring in the paint and begin. It’s important to prep the room beforehand to prevent spills, to ensure safety, and to protect the flooring and furniture.
