We are a professional painting and home improvement company in Yorktown, Virginia and we can walk you through how many coats of paint you should put on various surfaces.  As always, it depends on the independent situation, but below is a great place to start.  The first rule of thumb for any interior painting or exterior painting projects is if you change the color or sheen at all you must do two coats.  That is the simple practice we follow.  Below is a quick breakdown of the normal amount of coats we provide and what surfaces we include. 

Same color/sheen ceiling: (1) coat

Walls: Always (2) coats

Same color/sheen interior trim: (1) coat

Exterior Siding: (2) coats

Exterior trim: (1) coat, but would prefer two coats

Clear Sealer: (1) coat

Oil Semi transparent Stain: (1) coat

Solid Stain: (1) color if exact match and (2) if different color
